In a significant move ahead of the upcoming national polls, a pair of high-profile personalities in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance emerges in the wake of large-scale and fatal youth-led protests that rocked the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the removal of the sitting government.
A Pledge to Tackle Youth Demands
Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have officially vowed to focus on the issues raised by the new generation. This promise comes after the violent anti-corruption unrest that took place in September, which led to significant casualties.
"Consensus should not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the country needs," stated Lamichhane after the agreement was finalized.
The late summer revolt was sparked by widespread frustration over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This incident acted as a spark for deeper discontent stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and persistent allegations of deep-rooted graft in politics.
Details of the Fresh Political Partnership
According to the formal agreement, the roles for the imminent election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the leader of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the role of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known fifty-one-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, capturing widespread public dissatisfaction with the country's established political leadership. He has in the past held the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago freed on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a central player in Nepal's ongoing political transition. He played a role in setting up the caretaker government that came to power after the previous administration was dissolved.
Broader Government Consultations Taking Place
In a related event, the sitting interim prime minister over the weekend conducted consultations with several leading political leaders. These discussions involved ex- prime ministers and the presidents of rival major parties, marking the initial such gathering since the time of the uprising.
Following these meetings, the prime minister took to social media to emphasize that conducting a credible election is a shared duty. The message reiterated the government's dedication to guaranteeing a safe and fear-free environment for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
